Europe or the Amazon: An Honest Comparison

We run retreats in Spain, and we run them in Colombia. So I have an obvious commercial interest in telling you either that Europe is just as good, or that only the jungle is real.

Neither is true, and the trade-off is more interesting than the marketing on both sides suggests.

What the Amazon gives you that Europe cannot

Context

The medicine grows there. The tradition lives there. When you sit in Putumayo you are sitting inside the ecology and the community the practice came out of, with the sounds of the forest around you and a taita in his own territory rather than on a visit.

That is not a small thing and I will not pretend it is. Something in the experience is different when the setting is not borrowed.

Separation

Travelling far strips you of your habits. You are in a different climate, eating differently, without signal, unable to reach the people who normally manage your emotional state for you. That deprivation does real work. A European retreat two hours from home cannot manufacture it.

Reciprocity

Money spent in Putumayo largely stays in Putumayo. Given the pressures on those territories — extraction, deforestation, the long aftermath of armed conflict — that matters more than it is usually given credit for.

What Europe gives you that the Amazon cannot

The return

This is the strongest argument and it is rarely made properly. In the jungle model, you have the most significant experience of your life and then, often within 48 hours, you are on a long-haul flight back to your job.

The flight itself is a real problem. People are raw, sleepless, and emotionally porous, and then they are in an airport. I have lost count of the number of people who told me the insight was extraordinary and the re-entry undid most of it.

A European retreat lets you finish on a Sunday, sleep in your own bed, and be back in an integration circle two weeks later with the same people who held the ceremony. Integration is not an add-on to this work. Research on psychedelic outcomes consistently points to preparation and integration as central to whether change holds, and proximity makes integration practical rather than aspirational.

Medical proximity

Ceremonies are safe when screening is good and rare emergencies are handled fast. In rural Amazon, the nearest hospital can be hours away by river or road. Outside Barcelona, it is fifteen minutes.

For most people this never becomes relevant. For someone with any cardiac question mark, it is the deciding factor.

Time and money

A jungle retreat realistically costs two weeks of leave and long-haul flights on top of the retreat fee. A European retreat is a long weekend. That is not a lesser commitment — it is a commitment more people can actually make, and can repeat.

Language

Underrated. Processing grief in your third language is materially harder. Our team works across several languages precisely because the difference between being understood and being approximately understood, at 3am, is not cosmetic.

The honest failure modes on both sides

Amazon retreats fail when…

European retreats fail when…

Screening is minimal because volume is high and the market is tourist-driven

The tradition is decorative — vocabulary borrowed, no living lineage behind it

Integration is a farewell circle and a PDF

Comfort replaces depth; a spa with ceremony attached

The "shaman" is credentialled by the website, not by a community

Legal ambiguity means facilities cut corners they will not discuss

Re-entry is unsupported and the insight dissolves

Groups are too large to hold properly

So which one

My genuine view, having watched more than two thousand people through both:

If it is your first time, start in Europe. Not because it is easier, but because the variables you most need controlled — screening, medical proximity, language, integration — are better controlled here, and because you do not yet know how you respond to the medicine. Finding out eight hours from a hospital, in a language you half-speak, is an avoidable way to learn.

If you have sat several times and the work has become serious for you, go to the source. At some point the borrowed setting starts to feel like exactly that, and the pull toward the territory is worth following. That is a large part of why we run retreats in Colombia as well as in Spain.

The question is not which is more authentic. It is which one you can actually integrate afterwards.

You can see how our European retreats are structured, or start with a health evaluation call to work out which fits where you are.
