The Vagal Reset — What the Kambo Purge Is Actually Doing to Your Nervous System

When people describe what a Kambo ceremony feels like, they almost always land on the same inadequate word: intense. And it is. But intensity alone doesn't explain why so many people describe the experience as one of the most clarifying, relieving, or even beautiful things they've ever moved through — once it's over.


The answer lives in the nervous system. Specifically in the vagus nerve, the HPA axis, and a physiological mechanism that modern stress science has spent decades trying to understand: the incomplete stress cycle.


First: What You Are Actually Feeling in the Body

The secretion is applied to small, superficial burns on the skin — typically on the upper arm, leg, or chest. The lymphatic network sits just beneath the epidermis, and once the top layer of skin is gently removed, the peptides are absorbed directly into the lymph and begin entering systemic circulation within minutes.

The onset is fast. Within 30 seconds to two minutes, most people feel:

  • A sudden, strong increase in heartbeat — visible, audible, felt in the chest and throat

  • Heat spreading outward from the trunk through the limbs and into the face

  • Visible redness and flushing of the skin

  • Pressure or tightness in the head

  • Tingling in the hands, occasionally in the feet

  • Sweating, lightheadedness, a sense of the floor shifting

This is phyllomedusin and phyllokinin activating NK1 and bradykinin B2 receptors simultaneously — two classes of receptor that control vascular tone. Blood vessels dilate rapidly. Blood pressure drops. The heart compensates with reflex tachycardia. Meanwhile, sauvagine is engaging CRF1 receptors in the hypothalamus, triggering HPA axis activation and a cortisol-mediated sympathetic surge.1 The body is in full activation. Fight-or-flight, compressed into minutes.


The Misconception: "Expelling Toxins"


As the effects build, nausea arrives. Then cramping. Then, for most people, vomiting — often deep, forceful, producing yellow bile. This is the moment most commonly described as "the purge," and most commonly misinterpreted as the body rejecting poison.

It is not.


The purge is produced primarily by phyllocaerulein acting on CCK-A receptors along the GI tract — the same receptor class activated by the body's own cholecystokinin when you eat a fat-rich meal. The peptide triggers coordinated contractions of the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal system, forces the gallbladder to contract and expel bile, and stimulates pancreatic and gastric secretion.2 The result is a structured, mechanically specific clearing of the digestive system — not a toxic response, but a receptor-mediated signal executed precisely.


For many people, the act of vomiting produces an immediate sense of relief mid-session. Something releases. The sensation of "being squeezed from the inside out" gives way to a moment of stillness — and this transition is not incidental. It is the vagus nerve doing exactly what it evolved to do.



The Vagus Nerve and the Circuit Break


The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body — a wandering, bidirectional communication highway that connects the brain to the heart, lungs, gut, liver, and immune system. It is the primary conductor of the parasympathetic nervous system: the "rest and digest" counterpart to the sympathetic "fight or flight" state.


Chronic stress, trauma, and unprocessed emotional material create what researchers call vagal tone dysregulation: the nervous system becomes stuck in partial activation, unable to complete stress cycles and return to baseline. The physiological consequence is a state of persistent low-grade sympathetic arousal — tension, hypervigilance, digestive issues, immune dysregulation, disturbed sleep.


What Kambo does, pharmacologically, is force the completion of that cycle — at intensity. The peptides push the sympathetic nervous system to its maximum activation threshold: elevated cortisol, reflex tachycardia, heightened sensory acuity, the full biochemical signature of acute stress. The body reaches the peak of the stress curve it has been circling around, perhaps for years, and cannot avoid completing it.


Then the purge arrives — and with it, a profound vasovagal response. The intense stimulation of the vagus nerve through the act of vomiting triggers a sudden, massive shift out of sympathetic dominance and into deep parasympathetic activation.3 Heart rate drops. Blood pressure stabilizes. The body lands.


This is not metaphor. The vasovagal response is a documented physiological event — the same mechanism behind fainting when overwhelmed, behind the calm after crying, behind the relief that follows physical exertion. Kambo triggers it with unusual force and specificity, through a receptor cascade that bypasses the cortex entirely.


The Gut-Brain Restoration


The vagal stimulation during a Kambo session does more than push the body into rest-and-digest. By intensely activating afferent (upward-traveling) vagal pathways from the gut to the brain, it appears to disrupt the neurological static that accumulates in the gut-brain axis under chronic stress. The enteric nervous system — the 500 million neurons embedded in the GI wall — receives a complete reset signal.


This is one of the reasons participants frequently report not just physical relief after a session, but emotional release, mental clarity, a qualitative shift in mood and perception that continues in the days following the ceremony. The gut-brain axis governs far more than digestion: it modulates mood, immunity, sleep, appetite, and threat-detection. When it is dysregulated, everything downstream is affected. When it resets, the effects ripple outward.


Recovery: What Comes After


The active phase of a Kambo session — from application to resolution — typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes. The points are removed once the medicine has run its course, and the body settles relatively quickly. In the recovery period that follows, participants commonly report:

  • An unusual, deep calm — sometimes described as the most rested they have felt in months

  • Emotional release: tears, laughter, grief moving through without weight

  • Clarity of thought, reduced mental noise

  • Physical lightness, particularly in the gut and chest

  • Gratitude — a reliable and frequently noted quality, independent of how difficult the session was


In the days and weeks after, reported effects include improved immunity, increased physical stamina, better sleep, clearer emotional range, and in many cases a perceptual shift that practitioners describe as "a before and after" — a before-Kambo self and a self that is more capable of being present.


These effects are not guaranteed, not universal, and not yet fully explained by existing research. What is documented is the pharmacological mechanism — the receptor cascade, the vagal activation, the forced completion of the stress cycle — and what is consistently reported is a qualitative shift in wellbeing that begins where that mechanism ends.


Why Container Matters


What the nervous system needs in order to move through this process — rather than simply endure it — is safety. The experience of safety, even in the midst of maximum physiological intensity, is what allows the vagal reset to go deep rather than stay shallow.
