What is Bufo alvarius?


Bufo alvarius (also called Sonoran Desert Toad or Incilius alvarius) is a large amphibian found in northern Mexico and the southwestern U.S. Its venom glands secrete a milky substance rich in psychoactive alkaloids—especially 5-MeO-DMT, one of the most powerful naturally occurring psychedelics.


Archaeological discoveries in Mexico show depictions of toads with accentuated glands carved in stone, suggesting ritual use. These artifacts hint that Bufo was once revered as a sacred ally in spiritual practice.


The modern rediscovery came in the 1980s, when “Albert Most” published The Psychedelic

The secretion contains bufotenine, but the magic lies in its 5-MeO-DMT content—sometimes up to 15% by weight. Vaporizing it sends the molecule straight to the lungs, where it rapidly crosses into the bloodstream and brain.


A synthetic version of 5-MeO-DMT is also available and nearly indistinguishable in effect. Many practitioners now prefer synthetic for ethical and ecological reasons, as it protects the toads from over-harvesting.

Risks & Precautions

Bufo alvarius and 5-MeO-DMT are often described as medicines of transformation, but they are not without risks. The intensity that makes the experience so powerful can also make it destabilizing—especially when approached without proper preparation, guidance, or integration.


1. Psychological Risks

  • Overwhelming intensity – The speed and power of the onset (within seconds) can trigger panic, fear, or a sense of annihilation that may feel traumatic if not properly held.

  • Psychosis risk – Individuals with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder should not take 5-MeO-DMT, as the experience can destabilize vulnerable minds.
