In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, a powerful healing ritual has been practiced , at least for centuries, by tribes like the Katukina and Matsés. It's called Kambo, and it's not a psychedelic journey, but a physical and spiritual purge using the secretion of the Giant Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor).
While often dismissed by Western medicine, Kambo's potent effects are no folklore. Science confirms that the frog's secretion is a complex cocktail of bioactive peptides—and some of these molecules have a fascinating story of their own.
As described by Amazonian tribes, this medicine support health, healing, and a deeper spiritual connection. Many participants I meet are looking for a remedy when Western medicine has not worked. While I can’t list specific illnesses or make medical claims, I can share my belief that people may explore alternative paths to address chronic health conditions.
I invite you to explore one of the Amazon’s most profound ancestral medicines. Beyond its recognized and emerging benefits, Kambo is traditionally used to deepen a spiritual connection, especially when preparing for other plant medicine journeys.

What Is a Kambo Cleanse?
Kambo is a traditional ritual that involves applying the secretion of the Giant Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), a tree frog native to the Amazon rainforest, to small burns on the skin. Indigenous tribes, such as the Matses, Katukina, and Yawanawá, have used it for centuries for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.
It is often referred to as a "cleanse" due to its purgative effects, which are believed to detoxify the body and remove negative energies, or "panema," as described by Amazonian tribes.

Is Kambo a Vaccine?
The term "vaccine of the jungle" (Vacina da Floresta) is a colloquial name used by some indigenous groups and Western practitioners. It reflects Kambo’s traditional use to boost immunity, enhance stamina, and protect against illness, bad luck, or spiritual imbalances. The term is not literal—Kambo is not a vaccine in the medical sense—but it symbolizes its role as a preventive and restorative ritual. For example, tribes use it to improve hunting skills, increase strength, and ward off negative energies.
The term "vaccine" refer to a series ofthree Kambo applications within a single moon cycle, not to its medical definition.

What to Expect From a Kambo Experience
The Kambo experience is primarily physical, not psychoactive, though it may lead to emotional release. It hits fast and lasts for a short but intense period, usually about 5 to 30 minutes.
The experience begins with a wave of heat, a flushed face, and a racing heart. You might feel dizzy as your blood pressure drops, followed by intense nausea that often leads to vomiting. This purging is a key part of the process. You might also feel pressure in your head or body, and your vision could blur. Swelling in your face or lips, dry mouth, sweating, chills, and muscle weakness or cramps are also common.
After the most intense effects pass, you'll likely feel very tired and need to rest for a few hours to recover your energy. Afterward, many people describe feeling surprisingly good—more energetic, clear-headed, and emotionally stronger. Some even notice physical improvements, such as less pain.
However, you might also feel a bit tired or sore where the Kambo was applied.

Kambo Application
Kambo is typically administered on an empty stomach in the morning. Participants are asked to drink about two liters of water—no more—before and during the experience. The Kambo is applied to small, superficial burns on the skin, usually on the arms, legs, or back. The number of "dots" or applications can vary, but a practitioner will typically start with one or two to gauge a person's reaction before increasing the number.

The Science Behind the Peptides
Kambo’s secretion contains a complex mix of bioactive peptides—short chains of amino acids that interact with the human body's receptors to produce physiological effects. These peptides, studied since the 1980s by scientists like Vittorio Erspamer (who called Kambo a “fantastic chemical cocktail”), have potential medical applications, though most research is still preclinical (animal or in vitro studies).
Some of the key peptides and their effects include:
Phyllocaerulein: Stimulates gastric and pancreatic secretions, which can cause nausea, vomiting, that often leads to vomiting or an urgent need to use the bathroom, and hypotension. It may also increase sensory perception and endurance. It causes a powerful purge by stimulating the gallbladder and stomach, which is the signature effect of a Kambo session.
Sauvagine: Regulates cortisol and stress hormones, potentially aiding stress management. It also contributes to the purging and cardiovascular effects.
Dermorphin and Deltorphins: These are opioid peptides with analgesic properties, reportedly 30–40 times stronger than morphine but without the same side effects. They may relieve pain and induce mild euphoria.
Dermaseptins: Antimicrobial peptides effective against bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and some viruses.
Adenoregulin: Modulates adenosine receptors, potentially aiding stress regulation, sleep, and neurological recovery.
Phyllocaerulein causes a powerful purge by stimulating the gallbladder and stomach, which is the signature effect of a Kambo session.
The Symbolism of the Purge
The purge in plant medicine ceremonies is much more than a physical reaction; it is a deeply symbolic act of transformation. It represents a ritual death and rebirth, a chance to shed all that no longer serves you.
This physical expulsion is a powerful catharsis, a release of stagnant emotional baggage, trauma, and negative energies held within the body. By surrendering to the process, participants let go of the need for control and embrace a state of profound vulnerability.
Ultimately, the purge is an act of purification, creating a clean slate for the mind, body, and spirit. By letting go of the old, you make space for new insights, healing, and the renewal of your inner self.
The Promise vs. The Reality
Many people believe that pharmaceutical companies have already developed dozens of drugs from Kambo peptides. However, this is a misconception. Despite the promising early research, the development of Kambo-based drugs has largely stalled.
The reasons are complex:
The peptides' unique effects and the challenges of getting them approved for chronic conditions have been a major barrier.
Some of these peptides are difficult to synthesize in a lab, which is necessary for large-scale drug production.
There's also a lack of interest in developing new opioid-based painkillers due to the ongoing opioid crisis.
Today, there are no approved pharmaceuticals on the market that use these peptides, a testament to the difficult journey from a natural compound to a clinically proven drug.
This article is not about promoting or claiming, but rather informing about harm reduction.
Kambo is not easy—it’s intense and demanding. But for many, it brings a profound reset, both physically and spiritually, and remains a powerful tool in Amazonian traditions.
Safety, Legality, and the Dangers of Modern Use
For the indigenous people who use it, Kambo is a sacred ritual with strict rules and protocols. But in the West, its use is decontextualized, leading to significant dangers.
Medical professionals and health authorities have issued strong warnings about Kambo's use. It is linked to severe adverse effects, including:
Acute intoxication
Sudden cardiac arrest
Esophageal rupture
Liver and kidney damage
For this reason, government bodies in countries like Australia have officially classified Kambo as a dangerous substance.
The lack of clinical trials to support Kambo's health claims, combined with numerous documented cases of severe harm, has created a stark contrast between its traditional use and the risks associated with modern, unregulated ceremonies.
Why Is Kambo Offered During Ayahuasca Retreats?
Some participants attending an ayahuasca retreat may struggle to connect with the medicine or experience visions. Kambo is often offered to help "drop the resistance," prepare the body, and clear the path for the ayahuasca experience.
Final word
It's a challenge to be objective and stick to the article's intent. I remain convinced that nature holds an immense wisdom, one that is too often exploited by the pharmaceutical industry for profit. The real understanding, I feel, comes from a place beyond the mind's biases, from a deep, heart-centered faith in the natural world. This is the depth of trust one can have in Pachamama, the Earth Mother.
