Truffles VS Mushrooms: What's the Difference?

Updated: Nov 7, 2023

From childhood's earliest encounters with enchanting tales to adulthood's yearning to recapture the allure of wonder, our fascination with the mystical has endured. In our previous discussions on "los niños santos" or Magic Mushrooms, we delved into their capacity to guide us through profound self-discovery and emotional reformation. Today, we turn our attention to the intriguing comparison between Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms, unraveling their shared traits and inherent disparities for a deeper comprehension of their magic within the realms of nature.

Truffles vs Magic Mushrooms

Understanding Magic Truffles: Originally discovered in 1977 by the distinguished physician and mycologist Steven H. Pollock, Magic Truffles, also known as "sclerotia" or the philosopher's stone, signify a survival mechanism adopted by certain fungi under adverse conditions. These subterranean formations represent a compact mass of mycelium, preserving essential nutrients vital for the fungi's sustenance. Notably, Psilocybe Mexicana, Psilocybe Galindoi (Atlantis), Psilocybe Pajaritos, Psilocybe MicroMex, Psilocybe Hollandia, and Psilocybe Tampanensis are among the well-known varieties, each distinguished by varying degrees of potency determined by their psilocybin content.

Common Traits: Both Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms share several fundamental characteristics, including their shared belonging to the same organism, the presence of the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin, and the induction of similar physical effects such as dilated pupils, heightened sensory perception, and altered states of consciousness. Moreover, their ceremonial use for healing purposes, non-addictive nature, and the requirement for an empty stomach for optimal effects remain consistent across both variants.

Distinctive Differences: Distinguishing between Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms unveils notable differences in their appearance, growth patterns, and cultivation requirements. Magic Truffles, characterized by their rough, compact structure and dark coloration, remain concealed underground, undergoing a lengthier growth cycle compared to their above-ground counterparts, the delicate and more rapidly developing Magic Mushrooms. Moreover, the cultivation of Magic Truffles demands less stringent environmental conditions, making them less susceptible to external factors such as heat and dehydration.

Based on my personal experience, you will require a higher quantity of magic truffles, typically ranging from 15 to 20 grams, depending on the variety, to achieve an effect similar to that of 2-3 grams of magic mushrooms.

Legality and Medicinal Usage: Despite both containing psilocybin and psilocin, the legal status of Magic Truffles differs from that of Magic Mushrooms in several jurisdictions. While the sale of psilocybin and psilocin is generally prohibited, the classification of Magic Truffles as mycelium rather than mushrooms offers a unique legal exception in certain contexts. Furthermore, the extensive application of Magic Mushrooms in medical research, particularly in the treatment of depression, addiction, and anxiety, stands in contrast to the limited information available regarding the therapeutic potential of Magic Truffles.

Based on my recent research and discussions, as of the time of writing this article, psilocybin is legally utilized in various retreats in Spain and the Netherlands. The distinction lies in the authorization of only truffles in the Netherlands, while both truffles and magic mushrooms are permitted for use. However, both are decriminalized and prohibited for use in public spaces. In contrast, in other countries, the use of psilocybin remains a criminal offense.

Preparation for the Journey: An essential aspect of consuming these natural marvels lies in understanding the significance of dosage, setting, and preparation. With dosage being contingent on factors such as body weight, desired potency, and the form of the truffle or mushroom, responsible consumption is crucial to ensure a safe and transformative experience. Equally vital is the creation of a comfortable environment equipped with essential supplies, soothing music, and creative outlets to enhance the holistic journey.

Conclusion: The enchanting realm of Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms continues to intrigue, offering pathways to profound self-discovery and spiritual exploration. As we strive to navigate their distinctive properties and understand their intricate effects, the prudent application and respect for these potent natural entities will undoubtedly pave the way for a deeper connection with the mysteries of the natural world.
